Lithium
Lithium can be obtained from hard rocks, such as spodumene, and brines in salt lakes.
The most significant use of lithium is for rechargeable batteries for electric cars, electric bikes, and smartphones. Other applications of lithium are ceramics & glass, lubricating greases, etc.
Market Needs
In lithium production, where acid is used for leaching lithium from hard rocks, the remaining acid must be treated.
To obtain high purity lithium, impurities in hard rocks, such as magnesium, must also be removed.
Solutions
Limestone
- Neutralize the remaining acid in the process
Hydrated Lime
- Help precipitate impurities, such as magnesium, for removal
